A Happy Holiday

Today, being Christmas and all, I thought I’d talk about the indoor Christmas tree here up north. It is enormous, it dwarfs our puny little christmas tree down south. There are lots of fun ornaments on this tree, too. Much more interesting than the red and green balls we have on our tree. Here are a few of my favorites.

these fun bubble lights were all over the tree

and of course, this guy:

he's definitely my favorite.

And the presents, oh the presents! There were so many presents. I was happy to see that addressed to me. Woohoo.

I wondered what it could be.

Notice the tear in the corner? That’s where I stealthily tried to pull back the paper take a peek, but the woman was keeping a sharp eye on me and put a quick stop to it. She knows me too well; she knew I’d try to take a peek and she was ready.

My present turned out to be mini shortbread cookies, the perfect size for a little penguin such as me. I'm a generous penguin and I plan to share them with everyone.

I also wanted to point out my new Christmas sweater vest. Not many can pull off a sweater vest, but, being the fancy penguin that I am, I carry it off flawlessly.

pulling--it--off

A big winter storm is moving in tonight and continuing through tomorrow. Mr. Penguin is ready. We've got food, water, and most importantly, an SUV, so we're ready for anything Mother Nature throws our way.

let it snow!

Merry Christmas!

Up To Snow Good

I’m sure my perceptive readers and loyal twitter followers have noticed I’ve been sporting some new threads. I thought I’d take some time to address that today.

The man and woman permitted me to open my stocking before leaving for the holidays. I was told some of the items might be of use to me up north.

I needed a little help getting all the presents out, my little flippers just aren't long enough to reach all the way down to the toe of the stocking.

I got some great new clothes--a sweater vest, a hoodie, some roller skates and best of all, these pajamas. I love them.

note the fat kitty behind me, trying to sneak up on me

At first, the man was a bit leery of the pants, he doesn't think a proper penguin like me should wear pants. But after modeling them, he decided they were ok.

I was so dancing around in excitement so much, that we were unable to get decent pictures of my other outfits. But be sure to look for them in upcoming posts.

I wore the new jammies while traveling. Since my nightshirt doesn't cover my butt, and there are lots of kiddies at the airport due to the holidays, this jammie set was a little more family-friendly.

Also, since was more properly attired, I got to travel in the unzipped, open tote. If by wearing pants I get this kind of treatment, I might have to look into getting some more pairs.

The Case of the Missing Cookies--Solved!

Today the woman had some Christmas presents that needed to be wrapped. She had mailed her presents up north before we left so that we wouldn’t have to lug them around the airport along with our luggage. So when we arrived here a couple days ago, the presents we bought and shipped were waiting for us. Since we were alone today we took the opportunity to wrap them up. Upon opening one of the boxes, she discovered a box of homemade Christmas cookies that she spent two days looking for.

Funny story about these cookies, a story that helps illustrate all the craziness that I must put up with take care of on a daily basis. About a week ago, the woman’s aunt stopped by to drop off some presents. This aunt had thoughtfully baked a variety of tasty cookies for us to enjoy. Well, the woman put the cookies down and went about her day. When the man arrived home, the woman went to look for the cookies to show him. But they were gone! She looked all over for them but could not find them anywhere.

The man and I were worried; we didn’t want these misplaced cookies to entice another Mr. Jingles. But no matter how long and hard the woman (and the man and I) looked, the cookies were nowhere to be found. Today, we found out why. The woman had unintentionally put the cookies in a box of presents and shipped them up north. Luckily, since it’s cold the cookies still taste good, not stale at all. So we now have a whole box of delicious cookies to enjoy.

Oh, and about those presents. Well, I had to help the woman wrap them. And I think I did a darn good job, too.

This one was from me.

All the activity really wore me out. Somehow I ended up doing more wrapping than the lazy woman.

I'm ready to kick back with a nice, piping hot cup of cocoa, put on some Christmas movies, and just relax.

Baby, It's Cold Outside

Mr. Penguin is not a fan of the unusually cold weather we have been experiencing. This morning we had a bit of freezing rain. The trees were encased in ice. Luckily, Mr. Penguin has a big, bad truck to drive around in perilous weather. He had to venture out to the post office to mail out the last of his Christmas presents. By that time the roads were just wet, there was no ice, no snow. Schools are already anticipating bad weather tomorrow and are running on a 2 hour delay. They preempted my usual morning show to have the local news report on the weather. They sure are quick to get their panties in a twist over the tiniest bit of bad weather down here.

Buckeyes

Mr. Penguin is all about holiday treats and baking them. I feel like the woman would be on board if she felt better. The man complains about all the fattening sweets lying around but he eats them anyway. However, he is not about to make, nor help me bake, any. I have such a long list of things I want to try out!

So far, I’ve only been able to make one thing on that list--buckeyes. The woman and I made these last week, right before her symptoms got worse. Luckily, the recipe made a lot of them, so we’re good for a bit on sweets. But I’m hoping this week I can make a new treat. The buckeyes are good, but I would like something different, something a little less sugary. The man has sternly informed me that, as long as the woman’s symptoms remain severe, I can just forget about making any new tasty delights. Therefore, I have been concentrating my healing skills on trying to nurse her back to some semblance of health, or at least back to a level where she can be of use in the kitchen. I’m pretty confident I can get at least one new treat made this week. I will be sure to photo-record any kitchen baking adventure I can accomplish this week to share with my friends and fans.

White Christmas?

We had our first bit of snow for the year this afternoon. Just light flurries, only a scant amount of snow on the ground.

The way these southerners act you’d think it was 6 inches of snow. There aren’t many snow trucks here, in fact, our county has no snow plough at all. It doesn’t snow here enough to budget for snow removal. This is not a problem for seasoned winter veterans like the man and woman. To them this is nothing. It’s fun to watch the local news and all the talk is about the snow, they are all in a tizzy about it.

Good thing the man got new tires on my truck.

Nothing can stop us now, not even snow. We just have to worry about all the crazy, inexperienced southern drivers on the road.

Alright, onto my other adventure of the day. Today Mr. Penguin finally finished his holiday shopping; what a relief! I just finished wrapping all my gifts and boxing them up to ship out. It feels good to have that task done and out of the way.

Now, it's time for me to snuggle up between the man and woman and watch a movie, which is just what I intend to do now that all my things are done for the day.

It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year

snowyelf.jpg

Mr.Penguin is getting into the holiday spirit. I got the tree up and decorated this past weekend and I'm working on busting out the Christmas songs. I don't know why the man and woman are so reluctant to embrace the holiday cheer. Perhaps it's because it's not cold and snowy down here in the south. Hopefully, they will eventually come around. Mr.Penguin is ready to start the holiday baking, but, sadly, the woman is not as eager as I am.

Yesterday, I had the woman help me with a new holiday background for my blog. After a few hours and multiple failed attempts, we finally got it to work. Mr. Penguin thinks he should get the woman some blog editing classes for Christmas. But with her crazy, drug-addled brain and lack of focus I feel like it would just be a waste of my hard-earned money. I suppose I’ll have to send myself instead, then I won’t have to rely on her or the man to help me out with my blog and things would get posted a lot sooner.

* * * * * *

On a side note, Mr.Penguin was very distressed earlier this week to hear of his special lady’s knee injury. Mr. Penguin just wants to remind everyone that he is a highly skilled care-taker and has acquired a lot of experience nursing the woman on her bad days. He could be dispatched immediately to help care for anyone who is ill and requires the talents of a practiced nurse. Of course, it would mean leaving the sickly woman to care for herself during the day, which I don’t think she would like very much. But she needs to learn to care for herself if she doesn't get well soon. So, my lady, let me know if you need my assistance, I'll catch the next plane headed north.

Perfectly Portioned Penguin Pies

For Thanksgiving dessert the woman made these pies for me. They are the perfect size for a penguin. The only problem is I keep filling up on all the food--turkey, stuffing, cranberry sauce, sweet potatoes, mashed potatoes, etc--that I haven't been able to eat my desserts. I have had a taste of each via a bite from the man and woman, but my poor little tummy isn't accustomed to vast amounts of food at once; I just haven't been able to make room in my tummy for a little pie. I feel bad about not eating them yet, since the woman went through the trouble of making them for me, but I don't want to make myself sick. We already have one sickly person in the house, we don't need any more.

On a happier note, I was finally allowed to put our Christmas tree up. I have been begging to do it for weeks, ever since the woman bought a tree, but I was told I'd have to wait until after Thanksgiving was over. Well, today was finally the day. We set it up and Mr. Penguin did all the trimming and decorating himself. I had to have a little help plugging in the lights. I'm very pleased with the results. Let the Christmas season begin!

Happy Thanksgiving!

Phew, am I glad Thanksgiving is over. Now I can get back to my normal schedule and not be stuck in the kitchen with the woman making things. I was so tired from this week that I had a hard time getting out of bed; I was just so tired.

Before I could help out with the food, I had to fuel up. The woman made pumpkin bourbon french toast for breakfast. Yum.

The man got to play video games while I had to slave away in the kitchen with the woman. Puff. I can’t wait til I’m old enough to do what I want, when I want all the time.

After preparing the food, the man forced me to change into a sweater. At first I was all hot and itchy, still warm from cooking in the kitchen. But once I sat down and cooled off I felt better. Plus, I looked super snazzy in my sweater, as you can see.

Our feast started off with some light appetizers:
sweet potato balls, white bean and kale crosinti, spinach and artichoke dip and most importantly, shrimp

I was even allowed one glass of sparkling wine.

I was so full after all these tasty delights, I had to take a break from eating. A few hours later I was ready for the main feast. Turkey, gravy, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, 2 kinds of stuffing (apple cranberry and regular), green bean casserole….yum. Right as I finish my plate I realized I forgot to get some cranberry sauce, but by this point there was no more room in my little tummy. Oh well, I’ll just be sure to have some with my leftovers tomorrow. I was even too full for dessert.

Overall, we had a nice, relaxing day. After the morning's activity, it was nice to just sit and chill the rest of the day and evening.

Tasty Treats and Helping Out

With Thanksgiving fast approaching this week, the woman has been busy planning out our feast. Thanksgiving is the man’s favorite holiday, so the woman has taken it upon herself to make all his holiday favorites, so he will not be cheated out of any of his favorite foods.

Since the woman has been sick and the man is away at work all day long, the burden of cooking for this feast falls upon Mr. Penguin’s [very capable] shoulders. The woman mapped out all the dishes she needs made for each day this week and gathered together all the recipes for me.

The kitchen was a disaster, so first I had to do the dishes and wipe the counters.

Then began the long marathon cooking session. I’m an expert at time management and was able to accomplish more than what was on the woman’s list.

I was even able to make some tasty little treats. I sampled one, but didn’t dare eat anymore. I didn’t want to get caught. Besides, these are the treats that will be served with after dinner coffee on thurs.

almond shortbread cookies

more shortbreads and double chocolate truffles

I'm tired and I'm ready for a well-deserved break. I'll have to go to bed early, because tomorrow I'll be doing more of the same thing.

Keep on Trucking

Ever since I can remember the man has been talking about getting a truck. He wants one so that we can haul stuff, drive over things, and basically just look tough and manly. Of course I was all for this idea, as for the woman, she could care less either way. The man enjoyed spending time searching for the perfect vehicle for us.

Finally, about a month ago he found a used truck worthy of us. He bought it from the dealership and I was allowed to ride along when we went to pick it up a few weeks ago.

I think we had it for about 3 days before the man took it into a repair shop to give it a new engine and fix a few things to make it good as new.

Down here in the south people like to do things at a slow pace; no sense of urgency, no one in a hurry to do anything. A nice, relaxing way to live you might say. Well, not for a high-strung penguin who likes to be instantly gratified, like myself. No sooner did we get it back from one repair shop then the man takes it to another one. I haven’t even been able to go for ride in my new truck yet! In fact, I barely got to see it before it was taken away from me.

Finally, this past weekend we were able to take it out for a spin. I love it. I sit so high up I tower above most other cars on the road; it makes me feel tough and powerful.

However, I do need some help reaching the pedals; Mr. Penguin has short legs.

There are still things I plan to do to improve my ride. As we drove around, the man and I compiled a list of our wants and wishes for our new toy. These include, but are not limited to:

roof rack
exhaust system
fix the leaky AC
floor mats
OSU tailgate hitch plug/cover
new or reupholstered seats (or seat covers)
new tires
suspension lift
light bar

Maybe if I had the proper tools I could do some of these with the help of the man. But neither he nor I have any car tools. *Puff*

Back in Action

Mr. Penguin has spent a very aggravating past couple weeks with no internet service. I know my fans have missed hearing from me as much as I have missed sharing my adventures with them. Hopefully, this will be the end of my technical difficulties/issues. I know you are all anxious to hear about my new truck; don’t worry that post will be coming this weekend.

Election Day

Photobucket

Mr. Penguin is tired of his voice being ignored by the government and he, like many American’s, hope that by voting today he can change that. Mr. Penguin cherishes his freedom and is very proud to be a citizen of the greatest country in the world. I like doing what I want, when I want.

Mr. Penguin was excited to cast his vote. There were lots of signs and people trying to influence my vote; I’m happy to report that I was not offered any “walking around money” for my vote. None of these tricks would have work on me anyway, Mr. Penguin is pleased to say that he is a very informed voter. He researched candidates thoroughly, reading both pro and anti sources in order form his own opinion and decide which candidate best reflected my own views. I’m a very meticulous researcher.

There was a very kindly woman working at the polling place who happily explained to me how the whole process worked. Having heard reports of problems at other polling sites I made sure the ballot accepted my chosen candidates.

Mr. Penguin encourages all his readers to go exercise your freedom and vote so your voice can be heard, too.
